Chantilly
was designed by William Christmas Codman (1839 - 1921) for
Gorham Silver in 1895. This pattern went on to become the most popular flatware
pattern ever produced. Chantilly has been particularly
popular among newly-weds, and is George and Laura Bush's choice for the flatware
service on Air Force One.
Chantilly's graceful border, plain center, and fleur-de-lis
tip are inspired by the 18th century French "Regency"
period. During the reign of King Louis XV, the French court had a strong appreciation
for the humanities, particularly art. Today, this influence can best be seen in
the town of Chantilly, France where Louis' cousins, the Princes de Conde, erected
the Chateau de Chantilly. The presence of the "Rococo" style (curved,
flowing lines) can be seen in rooms, paintings, furniture, clothes and dinnerware
of the time. The period featured a pleasing contrast of ornate decoration and
understated grace.
Borrowing the French town's name, Codman followed "Rococo" themes
when designing the Chantilly flatware pattern. The pattern's
style and grace, paired with Gorham's unwavering quality and craftsmanship, have
made this pattern a best seller for over 106 years. This pattern is fit for any
household and setting, be it a state dinner or a backyard barbecue!
